The Racking Horse (Equus caballus) was adopted as Alabama's official horse in 1975.

A Popular Symbol

Rivaling the domestic dog in popularity, various horse breeds have been adopted as official symbols by at least two countries (Mongolia and Canada), two Canadian provinces (Newfoundland and Nova Scotia), and fourteen U.S. states: Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont. And let’s not foget the mule, an official symbol of Missouri and South Carolina.
