Alabama’s official historic theatre is the Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts, located in Birmingham. The Theatre opened in 1927 and was once part of the Paramount Theatre Chain. Christened the “Showplace of the South,” it has been graced by stars like John Barrymore, Roy Rogers and Tallulah Bankhead. Alabama Dept. of Archives and History notes that it is also home to “The Mighty Wurlitzer” organ.

Over half a century of show biz nearly ended when the theatre closed its doors in 1981. Fortunately, a new owner turned the Birmingham landmark into a performing arts center. It was designated the state historic theatre in 1993.
